FANTASY BASEBALL OWNERS NEED SHORT MEMORIES

Now that the 2012 baseball season is 30 games old, can we predict anything correctly?
Is it safe to assume that being a fantasy baseball owner is the toughest job in the world?
Injured players occur daily and star players either suck or start off too slow as if they are
Waiting for summer.  Some players are on bereavement or decide to get suspended for
Hitting other players with a pitch.  We can expect the unexpected to happen so dig deep
And hang on for a wild season.

Hello my name is No Mas Thomas and I play in a 10 team fantasy baseball league with owners
Living in Colorado, Indiana and Wisconsin.  This is my fourth or fifth year trying to maintain some
Sanity watching a game of incredible skill  and at times some baseball luck.  I play fantasy baseball
For one main reason – to follow the sport of baseball, have fun and if luck has its way to win.

My sports perspective is somewhat unique but very broad.  Living in BRONCO COUNTRY my whole
Life, football was and is my favorite sport.  Once the Rockies emerged as a World Series participant
In 2007, I embraced the Purple team with pride.  My fondness for baseball has grown ever since, but
Fantasy baseball has challenged me to follow other teams and players and has become a nightly
Addiction.

Now that the fantasy draft is behind us, our teams must continue to be molded though out the season with
New players.  Since this is the toughest job in the world, as a fantasy owner this molding or nurturing process
Process is like walking barefoot on broken glass.  Patience on a player or knee jerk reactions to cut a player
Will determine if your team will succeed or fail.

As a guest writer for Cowboy’s Baseball, I wanted to share a few thoughts about free agents and talk specifically
About this year’s free agent class in our league.  First and foremost, be active in free agency and address any
Weakness.  Identify your weakness and stray away from falling in love with players that were drafted.  Swallow
Your pride on players who were high on your list on draft day and move forward if you want to win your league.

My strategy for free agents on position players is pretty simple.  I study a players last ten games and look for touches
On runs scored, multiple hit games and on base percentage.  If I see a good pattern on touches I rank that player as
A good pickup.  I tend to pass on new players that show power but are not consistent in hits for the last ten days.

This year’s free agent pitchers have been easier to qualify and each week the numbers keep rising.
My simple system for researching a pitcher begins with innings pitched, a WHIP score and strike outs.
I want to see a player pitch at least 6 plus innings and have a WHIP of 1.15 and under and 5 to 6 strike outs.
Wins are nice in fantasy, but a good start can quickly erode once the opposing team gets to a weak bullpen.
Relief pitching is a scoring category in fantasy, but to chase saves if very difficult as teams switch closers
Like women buying purses or shoes – daily.

Last year was a good free agent year as my team picked up players like Ryan Vogelsong, Ian Kennedy and Alex Gordon.
This year the month of April was very good to most of our fantasy owners.  Keep in mind, if you drafted well most free
Agents fell to the owners in the bottom of the standings, which will help keep you competitive and interested in the end.
Listed below are some of our owners and my comments on their free agency moves

COLORADO CARDS  added Lance Lynn, Matt Capps, Ross Detwieler, Matt Moore, Matt Latos, Trevor Cahill.

Comment:  Outstanding pickups and missed out on the Yu Darvish trade.
Prediction:  I am drinking the kool-aid on a strong third place finish

UNBEATABLE ROSES added Fernando Rodney and Pedro Alvarez

Comment:  Strong closer and hot hitter.
Prediction:  Simon has learned a lot over the last few seasons and may finish in the money

CONTROLLED FURY added Jonathan Broxton, Jake Peavy and Jeff Samardzija

Comment:  Dennis picked a closer and two stud starters from Chicago
Prediction:  Has the talent to make a run at the trophy if his disabled list shrinks.

LAKE WYLIE LEAPING PORCHES added Rafael Furcal, Adam LaRoche, Jake Arrieta and David Robertson

Comment:  Brian found a strong first baseman, speed at short and a possible closer for the Yankees
Prediction:  Last place does not cut it for the team that took first place in 2011.  Expect a leap from the Leaping Porches.

Enjoy the Season owners and make those free agent moves……No Mas Thomas
