Welcome to the HOF Ron Santo & Barry Larkin!!! Today Barry Larkin joins Ron Santo in the Hall Of Fame class of 2012. Santo & Larkin are excellent choices & well-deserving of this honor.
Ron Santo is absolutely one of the top ten third basemen of all time. I believe that it is a travesty that he fell to being elected posthumously. With each successive year of his being passed over, I could only cry out, '' OOOOhhhh NNNNoooo!!!! '' His lifetime stats are solid, but they are much more than that when compared to third basemen & when thought of in terms of the era in which he played. Ron Santo played in the era of the pitcher and yet he hit 342 home runs & had a .464 sliugging percentage - 2nd only to Eddie Mathews among 3rd basemen to that point. Santo also was a 5 time Gold Glove winner & led in many lifetime NL third base defensive categories until Mike Schmidt eventually eclipsed them. His NL records included records for career assists, total chances, & putouts. These records & others lasted as well until Mike Schmidt, the greatest third baseman of all time, came on the scene. Ron Santo was the best of his time & one of the best ever. It was a pure pleasure to see him play. Kick up your heels one more time Ron ...
Barry Larkin was a 12 time all star, a winner of 3 Gold Gloves, & was the 1st shortstop ever to hit 30 home runs & steal 30 bases in a season. As well, he garnered an MVP and won the Roberto Clemente Award. He was a World Series winner in 1990 and contributed by hitting .353 in the series. In 1995 he hit .389 in the NL Championship Series. Barry Larkin was a captain and according to his peers, he was a great leader. He had a career .295 batting average complimented by 198 home runs & 379 stolen bases. His career crossed paths with that of Ozzie Smith; if not for that, he may well of had as many as 10 Gold Gloves. Baseball historian & expert Bill James calls Larkin one of the greatest shortstops of all time & ranks him 6th all-time. An interesting little known point worth mentioning is that Barry Larkin learned to speak Spanish so as to have a better rapport w/his Hispanic teammates. I believes that this speaks volumes to his success, both as a player & as a person ...
Congratulations Ron & Barry!!! You have both wonderfully represented the great sport of baseball - both on the field on off. Welcome to the HOF!!!
Until next time, so long everybody ...

Say, Look Who's No. 1

Over at Baseball: Past and Present, Graham Womack's solicited ballots and compiled a Hall of Fame "inner circle", ranked 1-50 and accompanied by short essays.
Check out the first player on the list (and the first essayist, if you're so moved), then notice the razor-thin margin by which No. 1 edged No. 2.

This one's more clubby than usual, because at least two Hot Cornerites -- plus a few other SB Nationals -- contributed to this tremendous new project:
You should get it. It's cheap! It's good! And it's super-easy! Check it out!

Sunday to mark 'pinnacle' of late Santo's career

Fergie Jenkins can't wait until Ron Santo is able to add "Hall of Fame" after his name. Unfortunately, as Cubs fans know, the honor came too late for Santo to do that himself.

Tex: Not Happy W/ 1st Half ...
Of all the guys on the Yankees, Mark Teixeira probably needed the All-Star break more than anyone. Teixeira spent much of the first half coughing and hoarse because of inflamed bronchial airways.
"I wasn't happy with my first half at all," Teixeira said after the final first-half game in Boston on Sunday night. "I didn't feel like myself the whole first half. I talked with you guys about it in Tampa -- this break is going to be really good for me to get some rest and get rejuvenated for the second half."
After his typical slow start, Teixiera finished the first half at .250 with 15 homers and 50 RBIs. His OPS is .808, nearly 100 points below his career average (.899). Last year at the intermission, he was at .244, with 25 homers and 65 RBIs. His OPS was .871.
Teixeira thinks the whole team can play better.
"I don't think any of us would say we played our best baseball," Teixeira said. "Hopefully, there is better baseball to played. That being said you have to feel good about your position right now."

Kerry Wood Enjoying Retirement ...
Wood enjoying retirement, knows he made the right call
July 15, 2012, 1:20 pmKerry Wood is learning what it’s like to be a Cubs fan.
The recently-retired Wood was on hand in the Cubs clubhouse at Wrigley Field prior to the series finale against Arizona on Sunday. But he wasn’t planning to stick around for the actual game.
“I’m 0-for-2 as a fan,” Wood said. “So I’m leaving before it starts.”
Wood said he has kept busy since his dramatic May 18 retirement. While he remains active with the Wood Family Foundation charitable organization, much of his time goes to hanging out with his wife, Sarah, and their three children.
“I’ve been waiting a long time for this,” he said. “It’s been great. It’s been Little League games and fishing. It’s been a great summer. It’s my first summer off in 25-plus years, so it’s been enjoyable.”
Wood said he’s being host to a baseball clinic beginning Monday, and that his foundation is joining with the Cubs to build a new high school baseball field on Addison Street, just west of Western Avenue and adjacent to Lane Tech High School’s Lane Stadium. Wood said groundbreaking will come soon on the field that will be used by Chicago high schools and for clinics.
While Wood is mostly out of the public eye now, his national commercial for State Farm has brought loads of attention. In it, Wood pulls from the ivy an old, brick-like cell phone, a French horn, and, of course, Andre Dawson.
The commercial, filmed about three weeks ago, has been a hit.
“I’ve gotten some good feedback,” Wood said. “It took nine hours, for that 30-second spot, but it was fun doing it. It was fun hanging out with “Hawk” all day. I’ve had people calling me about it from all over the country.”
As for his future, Wood ruled out any immediate move into coaching or management.
“Those guys spend so much more time around here than players do, so it would be kind of counterproductive of what I wanted to do,” he said. “I’d like to be here as much as I can without being in the way. So I’ll be around, but I don’t for sure exactly what (my role will be).”
He’ll likely be in an advisory role for the Cubs, especially as the season winds down. He said he expects to be around Wrigley more often once August rolls in, and when rosters expand in September.
One thing he said he won’t worry about is making a comeback.
“I’m enjoying family life too much,” he said. “I tried playing catch (Sunday), so I know (retirement is) the right decision.”

Well, not exactly. But here's Hank Aaron on the set of 42, with the actor (Chadwick Boseman) who's playing Jackie Robinson in the movie that comes out next spring:
This could be a lot of fun, with all sort of historical baseball figures depicted. But please please please let Boseman look like an actual baseball player out there.
