Marlon Byrd has played more center field for the Red Sox than anyone else this season. Yeah. So it's with great pleasure that the Red Sox welcome Jacoby Ellsbury back to the lineup, as the center fielder was activated from the DL Friday, with Justin Germano getting DFA'd to make room.
Ellsbury hurt his shoulder on April 13 when Reid Brignac fell on him during an attempted double play. Since then, the Red Sox have used eight different center fielders, with Byrd getting the bulk of the playing time. Since Byrd's release, though, Ryan Kalish has been getting most of the starts.
Ellsbury is a huge component of the Red Sox' lineup, and he'll try to replicate the surprise MVP-caliber season that he had last year. He was 5-for-27 in eight rehab games for three different Red Sox affiliates, and he'll be in the starting lineup when the Red Sox play the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.
