What Theo Epstein magic? I sure didn't see much of it in Boston. Epstein did sign David Ortiz in 2003 after Minnesota Twins released him. But his subsequent free agents signings, including Carl Crawford $140 million), John Lackey ($77 million for 5 years), JD Drew ($85 million for 5 years) and Daisuke Matsuzaka ($103 million including the posting fee for 6 years), were hardly smashing successes. He chose to keep the injury prone Kevin Youkilis rather than sign Adrian Beltre for a long term contract at 3B.
ReplyDeleteMost telling, the Red Sox farm system is devoid of any first class talent. The last 2 players developed by the farm system were Pappelbon (now 30) and Jacoby Ellsbury (28).
Epstein did make a couple of good trades: (1) Hanley Ramirez for Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett in the short run brought the Sox a Worls Series championship and (2) acquiring Adrian Gonzales for 4 minor leaguers who aren't worth much was a great trade.
But overall, overall Epstein's record is hardly outstanding.
